1 in 8 workers in the UK face Verbal abuse, threats or physical attack in their workplace

In 2019 there were an estimated 694,000 incidents of violence at work in the UK, comprising of 330,000 assaults and 364,000 threats.

In Scotland in 2019, a Unison report showed  there were 37,622 reported incidents of work related violence across local government, education, NHS, Police , Fire and rescue and others.

Shop Workers’ trade union Usdaw reported in 2019 that 80% of shop workers believe violence and abuse are getting worse and nearly two-thirds have been victims of a physical or verbal attack.

Who faces this type of risk?

Healthcare, teaching and retail staff were particularly hit by workplace violence.

22% of health workers surveyed had experienced violence at work, with one in eight teachers and support staff witnessing verbal and physical abuse.

Any public-facing worker has a high chance of facing someone who maybe :

  • Emotionally upset
  • Angry
  • Abusive or
  • Aggressive

Especially at risk from conflict situations involving abuse and attack are staff who have to  interact with  people :

  • Under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other substances
  • Experiencing mental health problems
  • Committing criminal offences or breaking the law
  • Suffering from a clinical condition which affects their behaviour
