“Equip your school staff with life-saving #ZeroResponder bleed control skills. Learn why catastrophic bleed control training is a vital part of modern school safeguarding.”

The recent, heartbreaking stabbing attack on two young pupils at a secondary school in Brent, North West London, has once again brought the reality of school safety and pupil safeguarding to the forefront of our minds. My thoughts are with that school community, but as professionals, our thoughts must be accompanied by action.

I am incredibly proud to share my recent interview and article on “Training School Staff in Bleed Control in  the first edition of The European Journal of Tactical Response and Medicine. It highlights a critical shift in how we view school safety and safeguarding: moving from being a bystander to becoming a #ZeroResponder, properly equipped and trained to use

When Seconds Count, Training is the Difference

Life-threatening bleeding can occur in a heartbeat—whether it’s the result of an accident in a classroom, a criminal assault, an act of self-harm or a terrorist attack. These are the critical moments, when uncontrolled external life-threatening bleeding can lead to death in as little as five minutes.

Nowadays, emergency services often cannot reach the exact scene of a life-threatening bleeding incident within that time frame.

It is ordinary people, such as teachers, support staff, fellow pupils, and facilities staff, who are the #ZeroResponders. They are the people already on the scene and best able to identify and treat life-threatening bleeding, before the arrival of the First Responder police and paramedics.

Key Insights from the European Journal Article

In my article, I explore how the rise in violent incidents across the UK requires a modern safeguarding response. Here are the three key takeaways for school leaders:

  1. Equipment is Only Half the Battle: Many schools now have Bleed Control Kits on their walls, which is a fantastic first step. However, a kit is just a box unless the person holding it has the “muscle memory” and confidence to use a tourniquet or pack a wound under extreme pressure.

  2. The #ZeroResponder Mindset: Training shifts the staff’s perspective from “waiting for help” to “being the help.” This confidence reduces panic and ensures that life-saving intervention begins the moment an injury occurs.

  3. A New Safeguarding Standard: Bleed control skills should be viewed with the same level of necessity as Fire safety or EpiPen training. It is an essential component of a school’s statutory duty to keep young people safe.
